If you’re in the farming business, you know that harvest is where the numbers really matter. It’s easy to stress about how much of your crop is going to get left in the field or lost in the harvesting process. Fortunately, there are ways to manage this. For starters, having the right baler can save time, effort, and a significant amount of money. This is what to look for when buying a hay baler.

Consider Your Material

The first thing you’ll want to think about is the type of material you’ll be baling. Pay close attention to density and size. You’ll also want to consider volume and speed, which will allow you to ensure that any given baler will operate at a level that’s suitable for your growing operation.

For instance, there are some high-output balers that cannot produce heavy bales and thus operate at a higher cost per hour or else produce a volume and number of bales that aren’t cost-effective for transport. You’ll also want to be aware of energy-efficient balers for similar reasons. Focus on the cost per baled ton and then factor in operation and wire cost.

Baler Shape

You’ll find that there are two main categories: rectangular/square and round. Each of them has their own set of subcategories with various capabilities and specialties. On a basic level, square balers make it easier to stack and transport bales.

Round balers are ideal for packing hay more tightly, which makes them more efficient to operate. Variable chamber models bring plenty of additional baling options which will help you better control moisture levels.

Keep in mind that, while square balers might be easier to stack and store, the large ones can’t be stored outdoors in wet climates. Why? They’ll develop mold. Be sure they’re stored in an area where there’s protection from the elements, whether it be in a barn or under a waterproof tarp.
